Scam Alert!

On 05/22/2020 at approximately 3:45 pm a Forty Fort Borough resident received a phone call which came up as 570-287-8586 (Forty Fort Borough) on the caller ID.

The resident stated that the male calling him claimed to be a Forty Fort Police Officer and told the resident that the resident had an unpaid loan.  The "fake officer" provided the name of “Mark Brown” and said his badge number was 8467.   According to the resident, the subject, “Mark Brown”, advised him that if he does not pay the loan off, he would be arrested.

“Mark Brown” advised the resident that he would not accept cash payment and told the resident he would have to go to a CVS to buy a gift card.  The resident stated that he called the number back which directed him to the Forty Fort Police Department and then an automated system provided a number as 011-570-287-8586.  The male who identified himself as “Officer Mark Brown”, reportedly had an “Indian” accent.

The subject that identified himself as “Mark Brown” knew a lot about the resident, such as his name, date of birth, and home address.

Police will never call you about being delinquent on loan payments and they will never have you purchase a gift card for any reason.  Never provide any personal information to anyone over the telephone unless you are absolutely sure who you are talking to and the information being requested is reasonable based on the reason for the request.  If you are not sure, contact your local police department to verify the legitimacy of the call.
